Restaurant Rijpsburg is named after the first Dutch coal mining settlement on Svalbard that was founded in 1920 on the peninsula Bohemanneset on the northern coast of Isfjorden. It was named after Jan Cornelisz Rijp, a captain leading one of the ships of Willem Barentsz’s expedition, who dis-covered and opened Svalbard in 1596.

Barentsburg stands as the Russian "capital" of Svalbard, a town steeped in Arctic tales penned by Dutch explorers, Russian and Norwegian trappers, American and German merchants, adventurers, Soviet visionaries of communism, and Russian miners. Established in 1921 by the Dutch as a coal-mining settlement, Barentsburg has been under the administration of the State Trust "Arcticugol" since 1931. Today, its population hovers around 500 people, embodying a rich tapestry of history and culture amidst the Arctic wilderness.
