Pyramiden Pyramiden, nestled at the foot of a towering mountain, takes its name from its majestic surroundings. Established in 1911, this town is uniquely situated between mountains, a vast glacier, and sprawling moraines. Beginning coal production in 1956, Pyramiden flourished in the 1970s-1980s as a model of socialism. Preserved since 1998, its Soviet-era infrastructure remains intact, offering a glimpse into its storied past. Today, Pyramiden is open to visitors and is growing as a tourist destination. Renovated facilities including a boiler house, hotel, restaurant, and cinema attract not only tourists but also filmmakers, journalists, free riders, and bloggers from around the world.
The Nordenskiöld, part of the Lomonosov Plateau, is a formidable ice wall stretching approximately 25 km in length and 11 km in width. Flowing southwestward, it terminates in Adolfsbukta, a branch of Billefjorden. Named after Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, a Finnish geologist renowned for his expeditions to Svalbard, his contributions have left a lasting impact on Arctic exploration.
